What's Really Happening Up on That Rooftop

Commercial HVAC technician servicing rooftop package unit equipment in Central Texas.

Most people never see it. The HVAC tech kneeling on a hot rooftop, tools spread out, panel open, sun beating down. But that's where a lot of the real work happens.

Rooftop units do a heavy job. They run in the Texas heat, through storms, through freezing nights in January, and most of the time nobody thinks about them until something goes wrong.

Rooftop Units Need Attention Too

Commercial rooftop units, or RTUs if you're in the industry, handle the climate for entire floors of a building. They're tough, but they're not bulletproof. Over time, you'll see refrigerant issues, electrical problems, coil fouling, and worn-out contactors. Any one of those can take a unit down.

The tech in this photo is doing exactly what needs to be done, getting in close, checking the components, and not guessing. That kind of hands-on diagnostic work is how you catch a small problem before it turns into a full system replacement.

Don't Wait for the No-Cool Call

The worst time to find out your rooftop unit has a problem is when a tenant or employee calls in a complaint on a 100-degree day. By then, you're looking at emergency rates, possible equipment damage, and a hot building full of unhappy people.

Preventive maintenance on rooftop units isn't glamorous, but it saves money and headaches every single time.
